One way to get away from the crowds and to find some room to fish is to invest in some shoe leather and hike to less-accessible areas of rivers. Even stretches of river like the Rio Grande between Pilar and Velarde long the highway will have portions of the river that anglers will avoid because they are harder to reach. A little bit of walking can pay off with some good fishing.One exception to this is the Red River, where the best fishing is reported to be right in town. Although that seems odd, remember that these stretches of the river are also where the most fish will be stocked because of their accessibility. Also, local businesses and organizations will do their own stocking to boost visitors and attract guests.
